Festival of Nations 2006
Fun. As always.
Saw lots of people I knew... Sampled some good food...
Helped out a bit - serving food and such.
Even got something I've wanted for a long time (two somethings) - Henna Tattoos! I would never get the real thing, but these are fun and pretty and only last a week or so. Oh, and no needles ;)
The first one I got was a turtle on my left arm:
It goes on in a gel-like form that's cool and kind of tickles. Then it dries and gets crusty:
I only left the turtle on for a couple hours - so it's not as dark and won't last as long. The hand one I left on for 5 hours or so and it should last for quite a while :)
Earlier in the day was a joing wedding shower - for two friends who are getting married in June, one June 3rd and the other June 10th.
I finished my RA self eval and peer evals today. Otherwise I didn't get any "work" done. But that's ok. I needed a day off!

My Goodie Bag and My Fall Schedule
WAHOOO!!! I got my BEAUTIFUL BAG! today! The one that Sharon made for me. And it's even prettier in person. The outside is this wonderful corduroy (fuzzy goodness) and even the inside is gorgeous. She really outdid herself. I'm so happy.
It's going to be my crochet bag. Her craftiness shall be the inspiration for my future crafts!

So I was talking about the ABC show LOST with a friend of mine, while in the lab, and a professor started asking questions about it. (apparenlty we were quite animated in our discussion)
I loaned this professor the first season on DVD and she and her husband got really into it. She asks me to clarify bits and pieces everytime I see her.
She loaned it to her daughter and her boyfriend and they're hooked. But are sad that they'll have to wait until this summer for either reruns or the 2nd season on DVD.
Now the boyfriend's mom is borrowing the set on the son's recommendation.
Mwaahahahahahaaaa.....

Perhaps more like a Johnny Appleseed than a Christo, controversial artist Scott LoBaido set out Feb. 22 from his Staten Island, N.Y., home to paint a large-scale, stylized American flag on one roof in each of the 50 United States.

Scott LoBaido paints a U.S. flag on the roof of Laura’s Locksmith on Saturday in Denton. LoBaido is trying to paint one flag on the roof of a building in each of the 50 states.
He started his ninth flag on Saturday, having persuaded John and Laura Easterling to adorn the roof of their venerable Denton business, Laura’s Locksmith, on University Drive with a kinetic design that looks as if a flag is being unfolded.
LoBaido, 40, who witnessed the 9/11 attacks and wants to finish his project by the event’s fifth anniversary, said he was inspired to do his “Flags Across America Project” after helping people in Gulfport, Miss., clean up immediately after Hurricane Katrina. At first, there was little outside help, he said, and then the military started flying in relief and supplies with helicopters.
“I usually do murals, but I turned to someone and said, ‘I need a roof,’” LoBaido said.
He painted one of the surviving Gulfport roofs as a way to say thanks and then went back home to Staten Island to plan the project.
So far, LoBaido has worked his way through nine southern states on a shoestring budget. He’s had little luck attracting large-scale sponsors, but lots of luck with small gifts as he travels from state to state in his 1989 custom-painted Chevrolet Suburban, staying with friends as he searches for roofs. An old friend from Staten Island, Madlyn Jackson, offered him a place to stay in Carrollton while he was in Texas. At first, he planned on painting a roof somewhere in Fort Worth.
“The first day I had a tough time finding the right roof. I went from Carrollton to Bedford to North Richland Hills,” he said. “Everything was too new and I was getting frustrated.”
On a swing through Denton, he said he headed west on University Drive and the roof of Laura’s Locksmith caught his eye. He almost talked himself out of it, he said, but then hung a U-turn and talked the Easterlings into it.
“They were cautious at first, and had some questions — a lot of people think I’m selling something — but then they were real excited,” he said.
But Laura Easterling had to sweet-talk the landlord into this paint job.
“But you see so much that’s ugly, and nasty and bad in the world,” Laura Easterling said. “I hope this helps people remember how great this nation is.”
An experienced muralist, LoBaido said he’s used his brushes — and in this case paint rollers — to express his appreciation for his First Amendment freedoms before. Not long after 9/11, when students at an Upper West Side school stopped saying the Pledge of Allegiance, he went to the school and began to paint a flag on the school building. The move got him arrested and garnered him some notoriety. He’s also been arrested for artistically inspired protests at the Brooklyn Museum and the French Consulate. And some critics have said his works on canvas, such as a painting that depicted President Bush holding the flag and the severed head of Osama bin Laden, displayed at the National Arts Club two years ago, are deeply subversive.
LoBaido isn’t necessarily turning over a new leaf with this new project. His sketchpad reflects his ongoing riffs on the Stars and Stripes. But, he said this project is about doing something positive.
“I’ve tested the boundaries of First Amendment freedoms and I haven’t got my hands cut off for it,” he said. “There are lots of people to thank for that.”
The Easterlings, who have been in business since 1989, painted the building’s exterior a bright, southwestern gold and turquoise about six months ago. John Easterling said that they were tired of people not realizing where they were located.
With the roof painting, which LoBaido usually finishes in a day, he’s sure people won’t have a problem now.

Fierce Toe Cleavage
Aya and I were entertaining ourselves Friday while shopping for shoes. She used the term "toe cleavage" - when shoes don't cover your entire toe and the... cracks... or toe cleavage shows. We were quite entertained by this.
Went to see Sliver Friday night - hilarious :)
Later, while waiting for Dr. Who to come on we were channel flipping and found an old horror movie: House. I'd been talking about it earlier (and thinking about it over the years). I had watched part of it as a kid - the only scary movie I ever watched by myself - and it freaked me out. That part with the hand going down the toilet... let's just say I kept a close eye on the toilet for the next week or two. *shiver* I couldn't remember what the movie was, but Aya (being the horror movie-connoisseur she is) knew exactly what I was talking about. It was quite good luck that we caught it on TV last night. I finally got to see it again, as an adult, and of course it wasn't scary - minus one part with the bathroom mirror. I didn't remember that the Greatest American Hero was the main guy... neat :) and Bull from Night Court was one of the bad guys...
In other news... Fall class schedules are finally available online. Get this: the Education Department isn't offering a SINGLE class that I need for my degree. Not even online.

I'm still here...
Just nothing particularly interesting has happened in the last couple of days. Or perhaps I should say: nothing even remotely interesting. Because you all know I post at the slightest whim (see ketchup packets and giant snow-beavers).
Trying to get things done and trying to get rid of this annoying cold. That's pretty much what my last few days have been about.
I have to interpret a poem in Sign Language this afternoon and I'm incredibly nervous about that... but I've practiced and even met with a girl from class yesterday to go over it.
Uhmm.... Aya's stressing over her thesis stuff, but I know she'll get it done.
I got an A on a paper for my online class - and I was stressing about that.
It's really overcast and foggy and damp outside.

The Texan is revealed...
"You've got a bee in your bonnet."
I said this to a male friend today and he started swatting his head and looking around like "huh?".... Apparently that's a Southern term. I of course laughed out loud and said "No-no-no! You're fine. What I meant is that you're all in a hurry to..."
Ah well, it happens from time to time. The other day I said "Ya'll" and cringed afterwards.
To hear me speak I sound very Northern-Minnesotan - "Oooo yeaaah, surrrrre, you betcha." and "Oofda."
BUT
There's still a healthy portion of my roots left ;)

Couple more pics

This Beaver was made by some residents of Linden Hall after our last big snow storm. I know it doesn't look that big, but trust me, it was HUGE. I'm 6' and I didn't reach it's shoulders. It must have been at least 10' tall. It was awwwwesome!
And sometimes people do little things, they don't seem big... but they make you happy. Like most people who know me know I have this thing about ketchup. I reallllllly realllllllly like it. Love it even. And only the good stuff - Heinz. Well a while back I found this in my mail box - and knew it was from a friend, just not which one. I foud out it was a girl I work with and it just really made my day. It's the little things. Seriously. I am Easily Amused.

I love Two Lumps.
So last night was my first time bowling in about two weeks. Luckily I had my shots in my left arm and I'm a rightie. I kept my left arm glued to my side so I didn't have pain shooting up it - and this actually seemed to be quite good for my bowling skills. I bowled over my average all three games and in the second game I got my-very-first-ever TURKEY! (That's when you get three strikes in a row!) I am so excited. It may be the only time I ever get one, but dagnabbit I got one!
I am definitely sick. I'm dubbing this one a cold. Annoying as it may be to have a cold, I'm even more annoyed that I'm sick AGAIN. /sigh
Seriously people.
Next year, not living in the dorms, away from the germ factory, I'd better be well.
Anywho...
So I'm happy with my bowling performance even though we won the first game, lost the other two and overal points. I was running a fever for most of the night and didn't have use of one arm but I got a TURKEY! So there. S even said from now on I have to get a shot before every game. heh... yeah. Idon'tthinkso.
On a less happy note there is someone who did something really mean/rude/spiteful/selfish/shi--y to me this past weekend. I'm mad as a hatter about it and I will be confronting this person on this issue. Lord help me. I talk tough but I turn into a blathering-pile-o-jelly when I actually have to confront someone. Especially when I'm upset/mad. The emotions take over and I'm just a co-pilot watching myself blather and stutter on about how upset I am... Well, you get the picture. I'll be talking to this person later today. Hopefully. If I can find them. Wish me luck!

I kept my left arm glued to my side so I didn't have pain shooting up it - and this actually seemed to be quite good for my bowling skills. I bowled over my average all three games and in the second game I got my-very-first-ever TURKEY! (That's when you get three strikes in a row!) I am so excited. It may be the only time I ever get one, but dagnabbit I got one!
I am definitely sick. I'm dubbing this one a cold. Annoying as it may be to have a cold, I'm even more annoyed that I'm sick AGAIN. /sigh
Seriously people.
Next year, not living in the dorms, away from the germ factory, I'd better be well.
Anywho...
So I'm happy with my bowling performance even though we won the first game, lost the other two and overal points. I was running a fever for most of the night and didn't have use of one arm but I got a TURKEY! So there. S even said from now on I have to get a shot before every game. heh... yeah. Idon'tthinkso.
On a less happy note there is someone who did something really mean/rude/spiteful/selfish/shi--y to me this past weekend. I'm mad as a hatter about it and I will be confronting this person on this issue. Lord help me. I talk tough but I turn into a blathering-pile-o-jelly when I actually have to confront someone. Especially when I'm upset/mad. The emotions take over and I'm just a co-pilot watching myself blather and stutter on about how upset I am... Well, you get the picture. I'll be talking to this person later today. Hopefully. If I can find them. Wish me luck!

Needles, Steak, Friends and Annoyances..
Welp.. After class today I went to the Student Health Services Center and got stuck with two.. 2... TWO needles *double cringe*
The first was the DT - tetnis/dyptheria... which I was about a year over due for *cough* I kept saying I needed it... and it was just a bit achey, but I remember my arm hurting for a week after the last one.
The second one was the MMR - measles, mumps, ruebella... and even though I know I had it as a child I couldn't prove it because the records aren't there... and it freaking hurt when she stuck me. I flinched... she hit a nerve with that one.
It's achey now... but I waited until Friday so I wouldn't have to be lugging around a backpack ;) and now I can register for classes.
Afterwards Aya and I went to lunch. I figured since they always tell ya to go have a nice juicy steak after they stick ya with needles to suck out yer blood... So I reasoned - stick me with needles I get a big juicy steak ;) Makes sense, yes?
I dropped Aya off and sat in the parking lot for a while before I saw someone leaving - then sat there for quit a while longer waiting for him to leave. A friend of mine came by and chatted for a sec then headed on home. BUT then he came all the way back to where I was to tell me there was a space open closer to the building. Isn't that sweet :)
I've been charged twice for something. When we took our extended staff retreat back in December the ra's agreed to pool together the money for it. I took the money and sent the place a check. We had some trouble getting things settled, but we thought it was taken care of. Then on my credit card statement for this month I saw a charge from that place and was like "WHAAAT!?!"... I called the guy and let him know that was a BIG mistake. I am STILL waiting for him to get back to me.

Now I'm watching Star Trek TNG - the one where The Captain, Data and the Dr get stuck in the holo-deck in 1941 and the bullets are real... Data so young and cute... hehe he can't figure out why the lamp stops working - cuz it's come unplugged... hehehehehe good stuff!

It always makes me giddy
when I come home to a voice message from one of my British friends. Of course it makes me a bit sad too because I ALWAYS miss his calls. This is the 5th time he's called and I haven't been home for a single one.
But I got a funny message to day... so I'm happy.
Have asoar sore throat - which sucks.
hehe apparently my throat is taking flight...
Getting two shots tomorrow since the clinic I went to for the entire time I lived in TX can't find any record of me ever having the MMR (measles, mumps, ruebella) immunizations and I'm due for my DT (tetnis, dyptheria)... UGH...soar sore throat and soar arm :P

I'm finishing up my time at work... looking forward to playing with my new computer and FINALLY adding pictures and such to my WIKI!... but dreading walking into my room and finding that the gnome has had another party in my room.
(I wonder what his name is... Bob... yes... I shall name him Bob. And when I catch him he will be in very big trouble.) I suppose I will have to clean my room and finish unpacking before I begin playing (er did I say playing? I meant doing all that wiki work I've been neglecting) with my wiki again.

Picked up new computer.
Set up new computer at warp-speed.
Got picked up by Aya & D to go to D's family's home.

In other news.... my allergies are back :P Thank you Texas. Things are in bloom and the grass is actually semi-green. It has occured to me that I never see green grass in Texas. I'm usually only here at the end of summer - when it's been fried - or in winter when it hasn't yet recovered from being fried. So Spring Break is actually Spring time in Texas and the grass is green and the trees and flowers are blooming. And of course there's the grass fires... Added up = Aspen's allergies go craaaaazy.
Bah.

Home again, home again, hippity hop...
I'm finally home - after a day's delay.
I'm exhausted but can't sleep.
Keep thinking of all the things I HAVE to get done.
Comp store called today that the case I wanted (the reason I've been waiting 3 weeks for my new computer) has been discontinued.
GAAAAAAHHHHHHH
So... now they're using my second choice and they *promise* to have it ready for me when I get back on Saturday. (maybe I should have had that in writing... signed in blood...)

Puppy is all over me - not so much a puppy now as a 50+lb dog - but he's still a puppy at heart. And all three cats have welcomed me home as well.
Hopefully I will be able to spend some time with parental units, but I have assignments and they have work.
Will go see grandma tomorrow.
Oh, and I must remember July 4th...
Dr. Who rocks.

When my parents brought me home from the hospital my Dad went straight to the record player and plopped on a JD record. I grew up listening to his music and he is by far my favourite musician/songwriter. My very first concert (age 7 or so) was JD at the Coca Cola Starplex.
I can't really explain it but there's something about his music that just makes me feel at home wherever I am. My dad used to sing me to sleep with "Sunshine on My Shoulders".
My parents and I were SO sad when he died.
I did actually know his original last name, though I don't think I could have spelled it.

Waiting for my new 'puter
Yuuup... Waiting again.
I ordered a new computer two weeks ago, but there was some difficulty finding the right case for it. I'm hoping the case will come this week (before Spring Break) so I can get it set up and try it out. I haven't added any pictures to my wiki yet because my laptop has been a pain in the tushie. I did however, change the format a bit now since those helpful little hints told me I could add a sidebar :)
No luck on getting comments yet... :( sorry Sharon.
Apparently if you log in to get a free PBWiki account you can comment on my wiki. Free PB wikis can have up to 3 comments per page. Unlimited if I want to upgrade to premium :P

I've got several emotions rolling around inside me these days.
I've got entirely too much work and not nearly enough inspiration.
Awesome rain-slush-hail-snow-storm today (in that order). I couldn't see accross the street by the time the snow hit.
And someone managed to piss-off my best friend today. I could bonk that person upside the head at the moment. /growl
In the 9 years I've known her I've never known her to get that upset about anything. That person thorougly deserved every bit of that anger and more. Hoping my friend sticks to her guns and lets 'em have it. I'll be by her side the entire way.

I went to my second Hockey game this past weekend - first complete one (only stayed for first period of the first one). We won 3 to 1 over Alabama... poor Alabama was beaten to smithereens by the crowd, let alone what our team did to them...
I saw the movie Ultraviolet this weekend. It was better than the expectations I had set for it, but I did want to see it - had to see for myself if it had any redeeming qualities.

Updates for Everyone
1. Grandmother is better now - out of the hospital and back in the nursing home.
2. I have tickets to fly home during Spring Break. Will be leaving Monday afternoon and coming back Saturday morning. This means I will be missing Aya's birthday- but I told her she owed me one since she didn't fly down to NZ for my birthday ;) Besides we'll party after I get back!
3. After speaking with the computer store for the umpteenth time today I think they are FINALLY ordering the case for my computer. This means: another week before the case comes in and then a day or two to build my computer. GAH... I'm so impatient.
4. I've updated my blog roll because there were just too many links. No offense meant for any classmates I have excluded - I will still be checking your sites thru the Daybook.
5. I'm still incredibly bogged (yes bogged no blogged) down in school stuff - took on too much this semester.
I'm curious to know who in Washington (state) is checking my blog enough to make a good-sized *blip* on my map....

Last night (if you could even call it that at 5am) bowling went well. Set a new high record for myself. I was the last to bowl and managed to win us one game by 2 points and another game by 1 point.
After bowling we went to Applebee's to meet up with some more friends because R is up. We had just sat down when my mom called. She was hesitant to tell me the news about my grandmother - which we all know never bodes well. So, I got up and went to the restroom. I had just made it through the door when she told me the news: heart failure. If they tried to do surgery she wouldn't survive. All they can do is treat her with medication to make her comfortable. I asked her if the dr. gave a time frame and the response was - nobody knows, it could be tomorrow or 6 months.
I didn't ask if 6 months was the maximum... yeesh it's like asking how long that yoghurt in your fridge will last.

I started looking at plane tickets to come home at Spring Break and they're up in the 600's if I want to fly from here.

The Downfall
Friday was a good day. I only taught 1/2 the class I was expecting to. Found out I had all day Saturday off because of the weather. I went bowling with some frineds - one of whom (C) gave me an old ball. So now I have my own shoes and my own ball! Was a good day and a fun night.
Yesterday, on the other hand, started out poorly and only got worse...
-Woke up to cigarette smoke seeping under my door.
-Broken laptop.
-iPod stuck on same screen.
-Grandmother rushed to emergency room.
In that order.
-No news on grandma.
-Haven't dared to touch iPod today.
-Laptop is on and working, but if I turn it off or restart it I have to go through an annoying ritual to get it turned back on.
-Cig smoke just annoying.
Bah! I didn't want the rollercoaster to dip again so soon...
Can I yell at the engineer?

Shoebox Zoo
I stumbled accross the Shoebox Zoo one Sunday afternoon on the CBC. I was hooked immediately. A girl who grew up in Colorado moved back to her father's homeland (Scotland) after her mother dies. She discovers an antique/junk store and winds up with a box of little animal statues. After she brings them home they come alive... the rest of the series so far has been about their adventures together - along with Michael Scott. Now they're back in the U.S. I missed a couple :( but what I've seen has been quite cute :)
Thanks to Morgan I found a link to Radio Scotland's A Wizard Tale that talks about Michael Scott - the real-life man who inspired the Shoebox Zoo story.

I went back to the store yesterday and asked them to check on it yet again. The lady got on the phone with apple and griped at them a bit. They wound up giving me one sitting on the shelf - not engraved - which was fine with me because the engraving was just fluff. If mine does come in they'll switch me back :)

After doing my taxes and finding out I would get more back than I thought I figured - why not? My OLD computer lasted 6 years and is fully dead now. My laptop was great for travelling NZ but it's a bit slow for the things I need it to do now. So... new computer! I have a store here in town building one to my specs.

Another trip to D.C. for me?
I've been thinking about going back to D.C. I was only 8 the first time I went and it was a whirlwind 2 week trip from TX to PA with my grandparents. I would love to go back and look at the museums and such and NOW I have another reason for wanting to go there!

What else could I say, looking up at the chunky snow falling from the sky - backlit by a streetlight?
It earned me the following comment: "Aspen, you remind me of Kaylee." I decided to take as a compliment (which it was meant to be). She may be a bit dingy-ish but she's fun-loving and everybody likes her... Plus she winds up with the hot doctor ;)
It made me chuckle.
Survived the weekend Carousel process, though it had some very eventful moments. My last one... strange.
Bowling last night went well with us winning 3 out of 4. I bowled over my average all three games! /pats self on back

The Interpreter
Today my ASL 3 class met in the library. When the professor needed to speak with two different library workers I was the one who wound up interpreting for him.
Wow.
I wouldn't have thought I could do that, but I did! I've come a long way this semester and for that I'm quite happy :)

Facebook is a Plague
Sitting at work, checking blogs and such... Quiet day in the lab... So-not complaining... just enjoying...
Everytime I'm in the lab I see people Facebooking. It's ok. I set mine up and when someone ads me or leaves a msg on my wall I check it. Otherwise... /shrug.. it's just there. Oddly enough I have had 2 different people contact me through Facebook asking for jobs in the lab. THAT's an interesting use for Facebook...
I feel like I can never quite catch up with everything I need to do. When I complete something I give myself a pat on the back, take a couple of deep breaths, and look at what I still have to do. Unfortunately, it seems the list has grown each time...

Nostricles
That's right... Nostricles. Thanks to L for a great laugh at dinner.
In case you can't figure that one out - nostricles are the icilces that form in your nose when it's so freaking cold outside that the moisture inside your nose actually freezes.
You know those memories that make you laugh out loud - literally - I had one of those last night.
Someone was trying to sneak up behind me but I snuck up behind THEM! Mwahaha... Another mischevious plot foiled by yours truly.
Linden Hall is getting a new staff bulletin board down in the lobby. New theme: Greek Gods & Goddesses.
I've chosen Demeter, as she is a motherly figure... and I am "Momma."

PB Wiki
Is really neat. It's working great for my Project. It has taken me a bit to get used to the configuration - some of the commands are just a bit different from our class wiki, but they have a stylepage to help wtih that.

Prioritizing.
Yup...
I'm really excited about putting together my NZ Scrapbook Wiki - so much so that I'm going to have to balance that with my ASL 3 class - and with my newly added independent study class that relates to ASL and technology - and with my entirely online course. And now that my blogs and wiki's class doesn't meet anymore... I've got to get seriously organized, set a schedule for myself...
Wish me luck!

You guys missed a funny sight today. Some genius decided to park three inches from my car. LITERALLY.
*mutter* Stoopid peeps need to learn how to park.
Soooo... I had to climb in the passengers side and over to the drivers side. This was a funny thing to behold because of my long legs and the squishing and folding and grunting. Then I had to roll down my window, hang my head out and back out verrrry slowly so I didn't hit their stoopid car with my purty baby.

Why Lawwwzzzy Day!
I spent my evenin' in the company of some dear lil friends o' mine. I do believe I missed out on a wonderful party being hosted by the charming Mr. Froyd. I so hope he and his friends had a lovely time. I simply could not see gettin' all gussied up on a night this cold! Us Southern Ladies just do not possess the fortitude necessary for such a climate as this.

This is awesome! I sent Chewbacca an email last night telling him I hoped he could get his blog up and running again sometime. I also said I'd love for him to let me know if and when he did... and not only did he send me an email notifying me he has started it again, but he commented on mine!

Background: Grew up with Star Wars (like many others), Chewbacca was my fave character (him and that hottie Solo he hung out with), have one of the original Chewbacca dolls (from my childhood), and an almost-life-size cut out of him back home.

Another Wooky Bites the Dust
Thanks to Aya for spotting this.
Apparently there was a guy who started a blog as Chewbacca. Blogger made it a blog of note today and he had to close it down because it was getting too many hits and eating up his bandwidth (translation: he couldn't afford to keep it). Interesting on both accounts.

Apparently he had an older blog and I found the addy HERE.

Help is on the way!
I'm very excited that the Education Dept has decided to hire another Graduate Assistant to work in the Department. I will have some help!
And he's a blogger too. He maintains the MSUSA Cultural Diversity site for our University.

oh god...
I noticed last fall my old computer was about ready to die on me so I started looking at external hard drives. My dad actually bought me one for christmas and I tried transfering all my pictures, music, school files, etc. over to the external hd. When I checked the external hd with my laptop I saw that it only had transfered the folders (empty folders) and a few files. I was like... uhmmm???
This afternoon I had time, so I sat down to sort this out. My old computer didn't have any of those files either.... I did two system restores and nothing... the files are gone... they've gone *POOF*.... What am I going to do?!?
Worst of all I actually broke down today (after MONTHS of debating) and ordered an ipod! My old computer had 2500 songs....
And now...

Ok... stopped in mid-post to take my old computer to a local place...

Hoping and praying they can retreive the last 7 years (40 gb) of files I so desperately want back!
